SHARING NOT HOARDING Part 1

For the 16 panels of the Sharing not Hoarding project on the waterfront facing Mary Slessor Gardens, Swiss artists Monica Studer and Christoph van den Berg has created images comprising an imaginary park. This panorama, compiled from landscapes taken from their recent installation works, is composed of digitally generated images, without any photographic elements at all. Most of Studer/vdBerg’s projects comment on the relationship between digital imagery and the physical space we live in.

The work is inspired by and based on the artists’ earlier live cam installations, where visitors walk up to an outdoor viewfinder and then see themselves superimposed into an artificial space in real-time. For this work, they have borrowed the image of the viewfinder to rethink a well-known motif: a person peeking through binoculars to catch a glimpse of what is hidden behind the wall. The wall here, however, is formed by an impossible landscape, in contrast to the public space developing on the other side.

The shack seen on one of the panels, is on display ‘for real’ in the exhibition at West Ward Works, during the festival.
