INDIE GAME THE MOVIE

Indie game designers are a fascinating new breed of artists. Preferring to conceive, design, and program their distinctly personal games away from corporate influences, they can all too easily find the road to success is littered with immense hurdles.

Documentary filmmakers Lisanne Pajot and James Swirsky follow the trials, tribulations, and successes of three separate games and their creators in this engrossing documentary. Designer Edmund McMillen and programmer Tommy Refenes await the release of their first major game for Xbox, SuperMeatBoy. At PAX, a major video game expo, developer Phil Fish unveils his highly anticipated, four-years-in-the-making FEZ; while Jonathan Blow considers creating a follow-up to Braid, one of the highest-rated games of all time.

This film was funded with the help of hundreds of fans and has built up an enthusiastic following online. A study of determination against the odds, Indie Game: The Movie demonstrates the attributes needed to thrive in a peculiarly modern field of artistic endeavor. Reaching beyond the gaming audience, it offers a fresh perspective on just what it can take to succeed and questions exactly what is meant by the concept of ‘success’.

“I contributed to its funding and was very pleased with how it turned out.” Patrick, aged 18

NEoN are very excited to bring the first screening of this film to Dundee, Scotland home of video games, it has been organised in partnership with Discovery Film Festival at the DCA.
